The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The charts illustrate the locations where dance classes are held and the number of students in different age groups attending various types of dance classes.
Overall, the largest proportion of dance classes is held in private studios, while college-based studios are the least common venue. In terms of age groups and types of dance classes, ballet is most popular among children under 11 and modern dance is most popular among 11-16-year-olds.
As regards the locations of dance classes, private studios account for the largest proportion, at 48%. School halls used for after-school classes make up 24%, exactly half the figure for private studios. Community halls and other venues account for a further 18%, while college-based studios represent the smallest share, at just 10%.
In terms age groups and class types, students under 11 outnumber 11-16-year-olds in ballet and tap, while the reverse is true for modern dance. Around 600, 450 and 300 children under 11 attend ballet, tap and modern classes respectively. Among 11-16-year-olds, approximately 300 students take ballet classes, about half the figure for the younger group. By contrast, modern dance attracts just over 500 older students, making it the only category in which 11-16-year-olds clearly outnumber younger children. Attendance at tap classes is relatively similar in the two age groups, at roughly 450 and 420 students respectively.
