Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The data provided in the charts reveal the location where dance classes take place and the types of dance classes in which young people are currently interested in Australia.

Overall, private studios had the largest proportion of dance classes, and youngest age group was the biggest with the youngest age category and modern dance was the second largest with other age bracket.

Almost half of the dance classes are inside private studios, accounting for 48 percent. Other 24 percent dance practices take place after school hours in school halls. Moreover, other locations such as college based studios had 18 percent dance classes going on, whereas, only 10 percent were taking place in community halls and others.

Amongst the three dance categories, ballet led with the 600 number of students under the age of eleven, likewise modern dance was the second highest with age group of 11-16 with 500 students. Tap dance on the other hand, had more than 400 students and no more than 450 students in both age categories. While Ballet and modern dance had 300 students under the age of 11-16 and under the age 11 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of both charts, but the analysis is inconsistent. While you identify the primary location (private studios) and the leading dance category (ballet), the summary of the second chart is confusing. For instance, the sentence 'While Ballet and modern dance had 300 students under the age of 11-16 and under the age 11 respectively' is unclear and contradicts the earlier data provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are accurate and that the data points are clearly linked to the correct categories. The overview is present but lacks clarity due to awkward phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow of ideas is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and confusing sentence structures. For example, the second paragraph contains a run-on sentence that makes it difficult to follow the comparison. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'whereas', but they are sometimes applied in a way that does not logically connect the ideas. Improving the transition between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'accounting for', and 'categories'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and repetitive phrasing. For example, 'the youngest age group was the biggest with the youngest age category' is redundant and lacks precision. Additionally, the phrasing 'no more than 450 students' is slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise descriptors for data trends and avoid repeating the same words within the same sentence or paragraph.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect preposition usage ('in the charts' vs 'on the charts'), subject-verb agreement errors, and awkward sentence construction, such as 'ballet led with the 600 number of students'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the complexity of the sentences often leads to errors in tense or word order. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically sound before attempting more advanced structures.
