IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart shows the number of young people attending classes in different locations and provides a brief overview of the students, including their age groups and dance forms.

It provides the ratio of different classes in which most of the students take classes; the top one is private studios, in which 48% of the students participate, which is nearly half of the pie chart. Then, moving forward, we see School halls are in second place, reaching 24%, and this area is used after school hours. After this, community halls & others are in third place with a ratio of 18%, and then, last, there are college-based studios, which are not very popular, and their ratio is 10% less accommodated by students.

The bar graph shows the ratio of three different dance forms, which are skilled by the number of students. In this, we see that Ballet is very popular among students who are under 11, and their total strength is about 600, and those who are about 11 to 16 years old, their accommodation is about 300 in total strength. After this, we see Tap, which is not as popular as Ballet and Modern in both age groups. In this, there are 400 students in total who are about 11 to 16 years old, and there are about 420 students in total who are under 11 years old. At the last Modern, which is very highly populated with students who are about 11 to 16 years old, the total strength is 510, but in the under-11 age group, the total strength is about 300.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the bar graph. Key features are identified, such as the dominance of private studios (48%) and the popularity of Ballet among younger students. However, the analysis lacks a clear overview or a summary of the most significant trends. The comparison between the two charts is missing, and some data points are described in a slightly repetitive manner. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'main features' are synthesized into a clear overview paragraph and that comparisons between categories are more explicitly stated rather than just listing data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into three paragraphs, which is appropriate for this task. There is a logical progression from the pie chart to the bar graph. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'After this', 'Then, moving forward'). Some transitions between sentences feel forced, and the referencing could be smoother. While the overall arrangement is coherent, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the slightly disjointed flow between data points limit the score. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would enhance the readability and logical flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. Phrases like 'ratio of different classes' and 'total strength' are used repeatedly, which sounds unnatural in this context. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'not very popular, and their ratio is 10% less accommodated by students' and 'highly populated with students'. While the meaning is clear, the vocabulary does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for a higher band. Incorporating more specific terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'predominant', or 'marginal', would significantly improve the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'which are skilled by the number of students' and 'those who are about 11 to 16 years old, their accommodation is about 300'. The use of relative clauses is attempted, but the construction is often clunky. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision will help improve this score.
