Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart shows the locations where dance classes are held, while the bar chart illustrates the number of students in two age groups (under 11 and 11–16) attending three types of dance classes.

Overall, private studios are the most popular location for dance classes. In terms of dance types, ballet is the most popular choice for children under 11, whereas modern dance attracts the highest number of students aged 11 to 16.

Regarding the location of dance classes, private studios account for the largest proportion at 48%. School halls after school make up 24%, followed by community halls and other places at 18%. In contrast, college-based studios are the least common location, representing only 10% of the total.

Looking at the types of dance classes, ballet is taken by around 600 students under the age of 11, compared to about 300 students in the 11–16 age group. For tap dance, the figures are quite similar for both groups, with approximately 450 students under 11 and 420 students aged 11–16. Finally, modern dance is more popular among older children, with over 500 students aged 11–16, while only 300 students under 11 participate in this class.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected and reported key features from both charts. The comparisons between the two age groups and the different locations are accurate and well-supported by the data provided. You have successfully identified that private studios are the most popular location and highlighted the contrasting preferences for ballet and modern dance between the two age groups. The information is presented in a logical, analytical manner that fully satisfies the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the location data, and the dance type data. You have used cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'In contrast', 'Regarding', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the information smoothly. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from a general summary to specific details. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different datasets, ensuring the report is easy to follow and coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information precisely. Phrases like 'account for the largest proportion', 'represent only 10% of the total', and 'attracts the highest number of students' are used accurately. The vocabulary is appropriate for a formal report. While the range is adequate and precise, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data description (e.g., 'constitute', 'predominant', 'marginal') could further elevate the lexical score to the highest band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a good command of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'While the pie chart shows... the bar chart illustrates...' and '...ballet is the most popular choice for children under 11, whereas modern dance attracts...'. The punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating a high level of control over complex sentence forms and accurate tense usage throughout the report.
