IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the information about different locations across a town in Australia, where young people are given dance classes. While on the other hand, the bar chart shows three different types of dance classes and number of students enrolled as per two different age groups.

Firstly, the pie chart depicts that almost half of all the dance classes are taking place in private studios. Secondly, college based studios make up least of the locations used for teaching dance, only 10% of the total. Following to this, we can see that school halls (post-school) are opted most after private studios as venue for learning dance, which is around 24%. Lastly, 18% of the locations acquired for dance classes include community halls and other, in that town.

The bar graph compares different types of dance classes and students enrolled as per different age groups. Number of students under the age of 11 years, who preferred attending ballet dance classes is the highest, around 600. Contrarily, only 300 people below 11 age chose modern dancing classes and same number of students between age of 11 to 16 years opted for ballet dance classes. Lastly, for both age groups, around 400 to 450 students went for tap dance classes.

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'opted for', 'enrolled', and 'contrarily' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'locations acquired for dance classes' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'below 11 age' (which should be 'under the age of 11'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the information about' (which is redundant here), 'make up least of the locations' (missing an article: 'the least'), and 'same number of students between age of 11 to 16 years' (missing 'the' and 'the'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and consistent prepositional phrases.
