IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart provides a breakdown of the venues where dance classes are held, while the bar chart illustrates the three types of dance classes attended by young individuals in a specific Australian town

Overall, private studios are the most common location for dance classes, followed distantly by school halls (after-school), community halls & other venues, and finally college-based studios. Additionally, there are more students under the age of 11 attending classes of three types than their 11-16-year-old counterparts, except for modern dance.

Regarding dance class locations, private studios account for the highest percentage at 48%, which is double the proportion of classes held in school halls. While nearly one-fifth of dance classes take place in community halls and other locations, college-based studios are the least chosen location, comprising only one-tenth of the total.

Turning to types of dance classes, 600 children under 11 years are learning ballet, twice as many as that of those aged 11-16. A similar pattern is observed in the numbers of these two age cohorts opting for tap dancing, albeit less pronounced, with approximately 450 younger students compared to 420 older students. This contrasts starkly with modern dance classes, where just over 500 students in the 11-16 age group participate, compared to only 300 younger students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview and selected key features from both charts. The comparison between the two age groups is well-handled, particularly the contrast between ballet/tap and modern dance. The data is accurately reported, and the inclusion of specific figures (e.g., '48%', '600 children') supports your points well. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview is even more integrated; while you mention the age difference, you could explicitly link the popularity of locations to the age-related trends if the data allowed, though your current approach is already very strong and meets the criteria for a high score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the two charts, which helps the reader follow your analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'Turning to', and 'This contrasts starkly with' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout. The structure is professional and contributes to a coherent reading experience. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the progression from the general overview to specific details is logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic report. Phrases such as 'provides a breakdown', 'illustrates', 'proportion of classes', and 'age cohorts' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and allows for a natural flow of information. While the range is sufficient, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items could elevate the response further. However, the current usage is accurate and fits the context perfectly, with no errors that impede communication or cause confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while nearly one-fifth...', 'although less pronounced...') and comparative structures. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You maintain a consistent tone throughout, and the grammatical accuracy is high. There are no significant errors that distract the reader. To push into the highest band, you could experiment with even more diverse sentence patterns, but the current level of accuracy and range is very strong and well-suited for this task.
