Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, including locations and dance types for both age groups. However, the overview is slightly problematic; it includes subjective commentary ('dancing is a great exercise') which is not relevant to a data summary. While the key data points are identified, the comparison between age groups could be more analytical. For instance, the report lists figures but does not fully synthesize the trends, such as the clear shift in preference from ballet in the younger group to modern dance in the older group. The inclusion of irrelevant personal opinion in the overview prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on location and dance types respectively. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Whereas' and 'However', but they are sometimes used mechanically or with awkward phrasing. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'The location of dance classes student mostly prefer...', which lacks a smooth transition. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct data sets, which helps the reader follow the information, but the flow between sentences could be improved for better logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the data clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but word choice is occasionally imprecise or unidiomatic, such as 'lowest of all time' (which is hyperbolic for a static chart) and 'performed by... young people'. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'more prefer to go on modern dance'. While the range is sufficient to convey the main points, the lack of precision and some awkward phrasing limit the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'is performed by under 11 and 11 to 16 young people' and 'College-based studios are only the 10 percent'. Some sentences are structurally incomplete or awkward, such as 'The location of dance classes student mostly prefer to practice in the private studios'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching the 7.0 band, where a higher frequency of error-free sentences is expected.
