Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have identified the main features of the charts, the analysis is somewhat superficial. You have successfully highlighted the most popular location (private studios) and the age-related trends in dance styles, but the data reporting is inconsistent. For instance, the comparison between age groups for ballet is unclear, and the description of the 'other' category is confusing. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview and include more precise data points for all categories to fully satisfy the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or misused, such as the awkward transition 'however; this percentage is lowest'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the age groups. While there is a logical progression from the overview to the specific details, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'in contrast', 'consequently') would help to better connect your ideas and improve the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'highest number of people' and 'masses', which is not ideal for an academic report. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'least prefered' and 'type of dance classes'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'predominant', 'marginal', or 'fluctuation', and ensure that your spelling and word forms are accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('highest number of people chooses'), incorrect pluralisation ('three type of dance classes'), and punctuation errors, such as the misuse of the semicolon. Additionally, there are awkward phrasings like 'while this for other age group is half'. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and refining your use of articles and prepositions. Proofreading for these recurring errors will significantly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
