Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the locations and types of dance classes attended by young people in Australia.

Overall, the private studios were common venue for dance classes whereas college-based studios accounted for the smallest proportion. In terms of class type, ballet was considerably more popular among age group of under 11 while modern dance attracted more participants aged 11-16.

Regarding the location of dance classes, Private studios accounted for 48%, making them the predominant venue. This was exactly twice the proportion of dance classes held in School halls after-school, at 24%. A further 18% of classes took place in Community halls and others while College-based studios represented the lowest figure, only 10%.

The bar chart shows clearly difference in preferences between the two age group. Ballet was the most popular choice among young students under 11, with approximately 600 participants, as compared to 300 in the 11-16 age group. Tap attracted 450 young students and 500 older ones, showing relatively small differences. In contrast, around 600 participants of age group 11-16 were interested in modern dance, compared with 300 in the young students. The data indicate that younger children tended to favor ballet while modern dance was popular among older students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified and reported the main features of the charts. The overview clearly highlights the primary trends for both location and class type. You have also made relevant comparisons, such as noting that private studios were twice as popular as school halls and contrasting the age-related preferences for ballet and modern dance. The data is accurately represented, and the response covers all parts of the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently include all data points or categories mentioned in the charts, such as the 'Community halls and others' category, which you mentioned but could have integrated more smoothly into the comparative analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the two distinct charts (location and class type). Cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'Regarding', 'A further', and 'In contrast' are used appropriately to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the transition between the location paragraph and the class type paragraph could be more sophisticated. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the logical structure is well-maintained throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'predominant venue', 'accounted for', and 'showed relatively small differences' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and article usage, such as 'common venue' (should be 'a common venue') and 'age group of under 11' (should be 'the under-11 age group'). While you use some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'popular' or 'participants' to enhance the sophistication of your writing. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several instances of grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the bar chart shows clearly difference' (should be 'shows a clear difference') and 'participants of age group 11-16' (should be 'in the 11-16 age group'). Additionally, there are some missing articles and minor punctuation slips. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not significantly hinder the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles when referring to specific data groups.
