Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the key trends and providing data comparisons. However, the report is somewhat repetitive in its structure and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the data points are generally accurate, the description of the 'Tap' dance category is slightly confusing, as the student refers to it as 'classes for dance' without explicitly naming the category. To improve, ensure that all categories are clearly identified and that the overview highlights the most significant differences or similarities rather than just listing data points. The response meets the requirements of the task but lacks the depth of analysis expected for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between sentences is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices like 'In contrast' and 'As the result' is present, but they are sometimes used incorrectly or awkwardly, such as 'As the result' instead of 'As a result'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when comparing the age groups. The progression of ideas is logical, but the lack of varied linking words makes the text feel a bit disjointed. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring they are used in the correct context would significantly enhance the readability and coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. The student relies heavily on simple phrasing such as 'people who participated in' and 'recorded'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'upper 11' to refer to the older age group, which is not standard terminology. The repetition of 'people' and 'classes' throughout the text limits the lexical range. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'figure', 'majority', or 'minority', and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the under 11 people was' instead of 'were') and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'upper 11 who was 525'). The use of 'respectively' at the end of sentences is often misused or redundant in this context. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions would help improve the accuracy of the writing.
