IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates the different dance places where the Australian town’s young people are attending, while the bar graph depicts the different age groups attending the varieties of dance classes in the same place.

Overall, private studios are the place where nearly half of the students preferred to take the dance classes, whereas college-based studios were the least favorite of students. In terms of type of dance class, Vallet dance is most popular among the under-11 age group, whereas modern dance is much more popular among the 11-16 age group.

Private studios are the location where young people preferred to go and take class, marking it the highest among all at 48%, followed by school halls, which run class after schools at 24. Community halls and college-based studios were the least favorite of young people marked under 20%. They both lie at 18% and 10%, respectively.

In the context of the type of dance, 600 younger people who are under 11 have attended the ballet dance, whereas the 11-16 age group was exactly half the number of attendees in the under-11 age group, making it only 300. In contrast, the 11-16 age group is more in the modern dance, making the number of students more than 500. However, the under-11 age group was lesser in the modern dance group. In terms of tap dance, both age group attendees were in almost equal numbers, with just a variation of 25.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies the main features of both charts. You have successfully highlighted the dominance of private studios and the age-related trends in dance styles. The data is accurately reported, and you have made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the popularity of ballet and modern dance between the two age groups. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the prompt. For instance, while you mention '600 younger people', explicitly stating the unit (e.g., 'number of students') would improve clarity. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two different charts. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', and 'followed by' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. The progression of ideas is clear, although some transitions between sentences could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow. The use of referencing is generally accurate, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparisons being made between locations and age groups.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'depicts the different age groups' and 'marking it the highest' are appropriate for a report. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Vallet dance' (which should be 'ballet') and 'the under-11 age group was lesser in the modern dance group' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Using more precise collocations would elevate the response. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of the data trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is consistently clear. However, there are occasional errors in article usage and sentence construction, such as 'run class after schools' (should be 'run classes after school') and 'both age group attendees were in almost equal numbers' (should be 'attendees in both age groups were almost equal'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, aim for more consistent accuracy in complex sentence structures and subject-verb agreement.
