Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the proportion of different dance class venues in an Australian town. Whereas, the bar chart compares different dance forms by age group.
Overall, it can be observed that mostly younger generations prefers to practice dance at private studios. School halls and community halls are also one of the major contributors to the proportion whereas, college-based studios are the least prefer. Furthermore, Ballet is the most chosen dance form by children under age of 11, followed by Tap dance. Whereas, Modern dance is mostly preferred by children of age between 11-16.
First of all, the proportion of dance class locations is very unevenly distributed. Private studios contributes nearly half of the total proportion i.e. 48 %. Remaining major contributors are School halls and community halls with 24 % and 18 % of total proportion respectively. While college-based studios are least prefer by the dance performance as it only contributes around 10 % of total proportion.
Moving ahead, the most preferred dance type by children under age of 11 is Ballet dance where approximately 600 dancers under age of 11 perform this type of dance. However, age band of 11-16 don't prefer to perform this ballet dance as only 300 children between 11 to 16 chose this dance type. In contrast, Modern dance is most preferred by dancer with age between 11 to 16 where more than 500 dancers of this age band perform modern dance. But, modern dance is least popular among dancers under age of 11 as only 300 dancers of age under 11 prefer to do modern dance. However, Tap dance is more optimally distributed in both the age groups where approximately 450 dancers of age under 11 and 420 dancers of age between 11 to 16 perform this dance form.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and highlighting key features from both charts. You successfully identified the dominant venue (private studios) and the primary dance forms for each age group. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring data points are more accurately described; for instance, you mention 'nearly half' for 48%, which is accurate, but the description of the bar chart data could be more concise. The overview is present, but it would be stronger if it synthesized the relationship between the two charts more effectively rather than just listing them. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'Moving ahead' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'Moving ahead' is a bit informal for an academic report. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal cohesion within the final paragraph could be improved to avoid repetitive sentence structures when comparing the age groups.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'distributed', and 'contributors'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'least prefer' instead of 'least preferred' and 'dance performance' used to refer to the dancers themselves. While you successfully use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat certain phrases like 'age band' and 'proportion'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'preferred' and 'contribute' to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and word forms (e.g., 'younger generations prefers' should be 'prefer', 'least prefer' should be 'least preferred'). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'by dancer with age' instead of 'by dancers in the age group'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for verb endings and ensuring consistent tense usage throughout the report.
