Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, including the location distribution and the age-related dance preferences. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, while you mention the figures for ballet, you do not effectively compare the trends across all dance types or synthesize the data to provide a clear overview. The overview paragraph is a bit weak, as it focuses on 'ballet' and 'private studios' without fully capturing the broader picture of the data provided. To improve, ensure you group data logically and provide more comprehensive comparisons between the categories rather than listing figures in isolation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'However'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the dance types and the age groups could be smoother. The transition between the location data and the dance type data is abrupt. Improving the use of linking phrases to connect ideas within and between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks variety and precision. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'most famous' and 'take part'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'follow the trend most' and 'account for the highest contribution'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and data, such as 'predominant', 'account for a significant proportion', or 'the most popular venue'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is limited to basic descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The provided pie chart and bar graph illustrates' (subject-verb agreement), 'have take part' (incorrect verb tense), and 'students under was about 300' (missing noun). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
