The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The charts illustrate the locations of dance classes and the types of dance classes chosen by two different age groups.

Overall, private studios were the most common location, while college-based studios accounted for the smallest proportion. Regarding dance types, ballet was considerably more popular among younger children, whereas modern dance was preferred by the older age group.

According to the pie chart, 48% of dance classes were held in private studios. School halls were the second most common location, accounting for 24%, followed by community halls and other venues at 18%. Only 10% of classes took place in college-based studios.

The bar chart shows that around 610 students under 11 attended ballet classes, compared with approximately 300 students aged 11–16. Tap was relatively popular with both groups, with about 450 younger students and 420 older students participating. In contrast, modern dance attracted approximately 300 under-11, while the figure for the older group was much higher, at around 520 students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main features and supported these with accurate data from both charts. The comparison between the two age groups in the bar chart is well-handled, and the selection of data is relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly link the data points to the specific categories more consistently, as the transition between the pie chart and bar chart analysis is clear but could be further integrated by highlighting the most significant differences or similarities between the two datasets.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by chart type. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'According to', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the location data from the age-group preferences. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, making the report easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data-reporting task. Phrases such as 'accounted for the smallest proportion', 'considerably more popular', and 'the figure for the older group was much higher' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and fits the context of describing charts well. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'common' or 'popular' to add variety, though the current range is sufficient for a high band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with no significant errors that impede communication. You have used comparative structures effectively, such as 'whereas modern dance was preferred by the older age group'. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The sentences are well-constructed, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, which is typical of a high-level response.
