The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart and bar chart provide data about the location of dance classes and the participation of young people in a town in Australia currently.
Overall, private studios have the highest proportion, and college-based ones have the least share for the location of dance classes. Youngsters showed their highest interest in modern dance, and kids have the largest participation in ballet dance.
Firstly, private studios emerged as the favorite site for dance location with a 48% share, while school halls have half the proportion of private studios and stay at 24%. The community halls category has a limited 18%, while college-based studios have the lowest proportion and are limited to 10%.
For ballet dance, the age group under 11 has the highest participation with 600, while the age group 11-16 showed less interest with 300 individuals. There is a minor difference for the participation of tap dance, in which about 440 kids stay and around 420 youngsters participate in this category. In modern dance class, age group 11-16 outweighs the under-11 group and moves to 520.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of both charts. You have provided a clear overview and supported the key points with relevant data, such as the 48% share for private studios and the specific participation numbers for dance types. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more explicit comparisons between the two charts if possible, or ensure the data points are grouped more analytically. For instance, you could have grouped the dance types by age preference more clearly to highlight the contrast between the under-11s and the 11-16 age group. Overall, the task is well-addressed with accurate reporting of the provided information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'while', and 'in which', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between the two charts could be smoother; the shift from the location data to the participation data is somewhat abrupt. To improve, consider using a more sophisticated linking phrase to introduce the second chart, such as 'Turning to the participation data, the bar chart illustrates...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'highest proportion', 'outweighs', and 'participation' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'stay at 24%' or 'kids stay', which sound slightly unnatural in an academic context. To improve, aim for more precise academic vocabulary. For example, instead of saying 'kids stay', you could use 'the number of children stands at'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but incorporating more varied and precise descriptors would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is not impeded. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'college-based ones have the least share for the location of dance classes', where the phrasing is slightly clunky. Additionally, 'the age group 11-16 outweighs the under-11 group and moves to 520' is a bit informal. You have good control over basic grammar, but to reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or more sophisticated relative clauses.
