Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart and bar graph demonstrate the data on the location and types of dance classes attended by young people in Australia.

Overall, the pie chart illustrates the largest proportion of private studios where dance classes are held, while the bar graph shows those an upward trend in Ballet dance by under 11 as opposed to Modern dance in Australia.

In the terms of pie chart, private studios accounted for the significant share of 48% on the location of dance classes. This is followed by school halls (after-school) which occupied a considerable 24%. By contrast, community halls & other and college-based studios comprised relatively minor fractions contributing 18% and 10% respectively.

Looking at the details of bar graph, Ballet held the top position those aged under 11, with a value 600 students on X-axis as compared to Modern by a sharp decline to reach 300 students. This is followed by a stark contrast between the Ballet and Modern by those aged11-16, with a value of 300 and 600 students respectively. On the other hand Tap constituted of 450 pupils (under 11) which dipped slightly to 420 by 11- 16.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of both charts and provided relevant comparisons. You clearly highlighted the dominant location (private studios) and the contrasting trends in dance styles between the two age groups. However, the overview is slightly confusing; you mention an 'upward trend' in the bar graph, but the data represents two distinct age groups rather than a chronological progression over time. To improve, ensure your overview focuses on the most significant differences or patterns rather than describing the data as a trend. Overall, you covered all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'Looking at the details', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'In the terms of pie chart' (should be 'In terms of the pie chart'). Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two different data sets, which helps the reader follow your analysis. The progression of ideas is generally clear throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'proportion', 'constituted', and 'fractions'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'demonstrate the data on' (better: 'illustrate the data regarding') and 'those an upward trend' (which is grammatically incorrect). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some phrasing remains slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary choices are consistently accurate in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'those aged under 11' (missing 'for'), 'constituted of' (should be 'constituted'), and 'by those aged11-16' (missing a space). Additionally, the phrase 'with a value 600 students on X-axis' is grammatically incomplete. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences would help improve this score.
