Student answer (Band 7.5)

The provided pie chart and bar graph illustrate where young people in an Australian town attend dance classes and the specific styles of dance chosen by different age groups.

Overall, private studios are by far the most popular location for dance lessons, whereas college-based studios attract the lowest percentage of students. Additionally, ballet is the most favored style among children under 11, while modern dance is the top choice for those aged 11 to 16.

Regarding the venues, nearly half of all students (48%) attend lessons at private studios. School halls after school account for the second highest proportion at 24%, followed closely by community halls and other locations at 18%. In contrast, college-based studios represent the smallest fraction, accommodating just 10% of learners.

When examining dance preferences by age group, ballet dominates among students under 11 years old, with approximately 600 participants, compared to around 300 in the 11–16 age bracket. Conversely, modern dance shows the opposite pattern, drawing over 500 older students but only about 300 younger ones. Meanwhile, tap dance maintains a balanced popularity across both demographics, attracting roughly 450 students in the 11–16 age group and just over 400 among those under 11.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used an effective structure, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then two body paragraphs that categorize the data by venue and age group respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'additionally', 'regarding', 'in contrast', and 'conversely' are used effectively to link ideas and create a smooth flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, which helps the reader navigate the information easily. The referencing is clear throughout, and the overall arrangement of the report is coherent and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases such as 'most favored style', 'smallest fraction', 'accommodating', and 'maintains a balanced popularity' show a level of sophistication beyond basic reporting. The terminology is precise and relevant to the context of the charts. While the vocabulary is accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate even more varied or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to convey information with precision and clarity, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have utilized a variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while modern dance is the top choice...') and comparative structures ('nearly half of all students... compared to around 300...'). Punctuation is used correctly to manage sentence flow, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is clear and demonstrates a solid command of English grammar, which is well-suited for an academic report.
