Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of both the pie chart and the bar graph. You have successfully selected key data points, such as the popularity of private studios and the age-related trends in dance styles. However, the report lacks a clear, cohesive overview that synthesizes the data effectively. While you mention 'maximum' and 'least', the analysis is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more direct comparisons between the categories rather than listing figures sequentially. The summary is present but could be more integrated into the body paragraphs to provide a more professional report structure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'According to pie chart' and 'According to bar graph' are used repeatedly, which makes the flow feel stilted. There is a lack of varied linking words to connect ideas within and between sentences. While the progression of ideas is logical, the transitions between the different data sets could be smoother. Improving the variety of cohesive devices, such as using 'In contrast', 'Conversely', or 'Furthermore', would significantly enhance the readability and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and sophistication. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'maximum', 'least', and 'folks'. The use of 'folks' is too informal for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires a formal tone. There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as 'choose by individuals', which is slightly awkward. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'predominant', 'account for', 'proportion', or 'significant trend'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you avoid repetitive phrasing and demonstrate a better command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'The pie chart and bar graph depicts' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'the maximum Students' (incorrect capitalization). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods in some instances. The range of structures is limited, and there is a lack of complex sentence variety. To achieve a higher score, focus on correcting basic subject-verb agreement issues and aim to use a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses or participial phrases, while ensuring they remain error-free.
