IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are two types of information given: pie chart and bar graph, which illustrates the percentage of location of choreography classes and also a comparison of age groups who participate in such classes in Australia.

Overall, the locations of private studios are at the higher percentage and the lowest ones are college based studios. In terms of a bar graph, the ballet and tap dance are more than the modern dance for age under 11 while the age range of 11-16 is less than that of under age except the modern dance type.

The pie chart shows what percentages of dances classes are at a particular location. It can be seen that 48% of choreography units are in the private studios, educational centers' halls are of 24% that provides after school classes, 18% dances are at community halls and others while the least percentage is in college based studios of 10%.

The bar chart illustrates two main things, the types of dances and the age group that practice those dances. The first and foremost is the Ballet dance, and 600 students that are under 11 age learn this type of dance and adolescents who are between 11-16 age are recorded as 300 students. Secondly, the Tap dance shows 450 learners of under 11, and approximately 420 students above 11 till 16 age. Thirdly and lastly, modern dances notes 300 children of under 11 and approximately 510 students above 11 till 16.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the bar graph. You successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of private studios and the age-related trends in dance types. However, the analysis is slightly hindered by some imprecise reporting of data. For instance, stating 'the ballet and tap dance are more than the modern dance' is vague, and the comparison of age groups could be more clearly articulated. To improve, ensure that all comparisons are supported by specific data points from the charts to provide a more comprehensive overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each chart. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'It can be seen that', and 'Firstly' helps guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the second paragraph is a bit confusing, particularly the phrase 'the age range of 11-16 is less than that of under age'. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'choreography units', 'adolescents', and 'educational centers'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'choreography units' to describe dance classes, which is slightly unnatural. Additionally, the phrasing 'modern dances notes' is an incorrect collocation. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are contextually appropriate for describing statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the locations of private studios are at the higher percentage' (should be 'highest') and 'the age range of 11-16 is less than that of under age' (missing noun/reference). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors in articles and prepositions, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
