Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given pie chart illustrates the proportion of four various locations where young people attend their dance classes in an Australian town while the table describes the type of dance classes, popular among youngsters with respect to their specific age group.

Overall, most of the individuals attend their classes in private studios where Ballet is most popular in children under 11 and modern dance among teenagers while the least number of attendees choose college-based studios for their dance classes.

More than 600 students under the age of 11 do Ballet dance while those who are in age group 11-16 have a strength of only around 300. 48% of students attend their dance classes in private studios, 18% in community halls, 24% of them choose school halls where they do dance classes after school while mere 10% perform in college-based studios.

The numbers of students doing Tap dance are approx 450 and 420 in children under 11 and in teenagers aging between 11-16 respectively. Moreover, modern dance is more popular among elder students where almost 520 of them attend these specific classes while only around 300 students under 11 prefer this type.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key data points from both the pie chart and the table. You successfully identified the most popular locations and dance types, and made relevant comparisons between age groups. However, the report could be improved by ensuring the data is presented more accurately. For instance, you mention '600 students' for Ballet under 11, but the table indicates 600 for the total, not just Ballet. Additionally, the overview is slightly cluttered by including specific data points; it is better to keep the overview as a summary of trends and save the specific figures for the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the location data to the specific dance types. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'while', which help link ideas. However, the transition between the location paragraph and the dance type paragraph is a bit abrupt. To improve, you could use more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the two distinct data sets. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'illustrates', and 'attendees' correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'strength of only around 300' (which is not the standard way to describe student numbers) and 'perform in college-based studios' (where 'attend classes' would be more natural). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but the precision is occasionally lacking. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations related to data reporting and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening sentence which effectively combines two clauses. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'teenagers aging between 11-16' (should be 'aged') and 'mere 10%' (missing an article 'a mere 10%'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety is sufficient for the task. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles when discussing percentages and figures.
