The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The charts illustrate the locations of dance classes attended by young people in an Australian town, as well as the types of classes taken by two age groups.

Overall, private studios are by far the most common venue, while college-based studios account for the smallest proportion. In terms of dance styles, ballet is considerably more popular among children under 11, whereas modern dance is preferred by those aged 11–16.

Almost half of all dance classes, 48%, take place in private studios. School halls are the second most common location, accounting for 24%, followed by community halls and other venues at 18%. The remaining 10% are held in college-based studios.

Regarding the types of classes, around 600 under-11s attend ballet, compared with only 300 teenagers aged 11–16. Tap attracts approximately 450 younger children and 420 older ones, making it the most evenly balanced category. By contrast, modern dance shows the opposite pattern to ballet: approximately 300 under-11s participate, compared with about 520 in the older age group. Thus, younger children generally favour ballet, while teenagers show a strong preference for modern dance.
