Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of both charts, but the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. You successfully identify the proportions for the pie chart and the participant numbers for the bar chart. However, your description of the pie chart as having an 'upward trajectory' is inappropriate for static data; the chart shows a snapshot in time, not a trend over time. Additionally, the final sentence is incomplete, leaving the analysis of modern dance unfinished. To improve, ensure you distinguish between static data (proportions) and dynamic data (trends over time) and ensure all sentences are complete to fully address the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'In contrast', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, some transitions are used awkwardly, such as starting a sentence with 'While,' or 'Whereas,' which creates fragments. The flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that your paragraphing reflects a clear progression of information, moving from the overview to the specific details of each chart.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'allocation', 'dramatic shift', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'escalated' to describe static percentages in a pie chart, which is logically incorrect. There are also minor errors in collocation and phrasing, such as 'half of figure'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and descriptive adjectives would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The pie chart illustrate') and punctuation errors, particularly with the misuse of capital letters after commas ('Whereas,' and 'Initially, area...'). Some sentences are incomplete or lack necessary articles, which occasionally hinders the clarity of the message. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences have a clear subject and predicate.
