Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of both charts, identifying key trends such as the popularity of private studios and the age-related preferences for dance styles. However, the report lacks a clear, cohesive overview that synthesizes the data effectively. While the figures are generally accurate, the description of the second chart is somewhat repetitive and lacks a more analytical approach to comparing the age groups. To improve, ensure that the 'overview' paragraph highlights the most significant differences or trends across both charts rather than just listing the categories. The response is sufficient in length and addresses all parts of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'Then we have' and 'Lastly' makes the flow feel a bit simplistic. Paragraphing is present, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother to create a more professional tone. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from a more sophisticated use of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. Phrases like 'highest amount of classes' and 'mid range' are functional but repetitive. There is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive adjectives. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'predominant,' 'account for,' 'a significant proportion,' or 'fluctuate.' The spelling is generally accurate, but the word choice remains quite basic throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that persist. For instance, 'Both charts below illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'dance classes occurs' (plural/singular mismatch). Additionally, there are issues with punctuation, such as missing spaces after periods and inconsistent capitalization. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
