IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart illustrates the data about the location and the table represents the types of dance classes of different age groups that are currently attended in Australia.

Overall, private studios have the highest proportion and college-based studios have the lowest proportion. In terms of type of classes, ballet is more popular among the under 11 years while modern dance is more popular between the 11 to 16 age group.

Initially, almost 48% of dance classes are held in private studios, whereas school halls contribute half of the private studios which is 24%. Community halls and others account for 18% of dance classes while college-based studios represent only the smallest share, just at 10%.

On the other side, approximately 600 students take interest in ballet which is the highest amount that is more common under 11-s , while the 11 to 16 age group like modern dance class and almost 510 candidates are taking these classes. Only 300 number of students of the age of 11 to 16 years are showing interest in ballet while under 11-s same number of students are attending modern classes. In tap dance classes under 11-s students take a little bit more interest (430), while nearly 410 pupils are participating in that class.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the table. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the popularity of private studios and the age-related trends in dance styles. However, the analysis is slightly hindered by some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, stating that school halls contribute 'half of the private studios' is a misinterpretation of the chart, which shows them as separate categories. Additionally, the comparison of the table data is a bit cluttered, making it difficult for the reader to follow the specific trends. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately extracted and that comparisons are clearly linked to the categories provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'whereas', 'while', and 'on the other side' to connect ideas. However, the flow within the second body paragraph is somewhat mechanical, and the transition between the two datasets could be smoother. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'under 11-s same number of students are attending modern classes', where the connection to the previous data is slightly confusing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clearer pronoun reference would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'illustrates', and 'participating'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'take interest in' instead of 'show interest in' or 'are interested in', and '300 number of students' which is redundant. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. To reach a higher score, try to incorporate more varied reporting verbs and precise descriptors for statistical trends, avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'under 11-s' (incorrect pluralization/hyphenation), 'the 11 to 16 age group like modern dance' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'only 300 number of students' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more accurate use of articles and plural forms will help improve your grammatical accuracy.
