IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the data about the location and the table represents the types of dance classes of different age groups that are currently attended in Australia.

Overall, private studios have the highest proportion and college-based studios have the lowest proportion. In terms of type of classes, ballet is more popular among the under-11s while modern dance is more popular between the 11 to 16 age group.

Initially, almost 48% of dance classes are held in private studios, whereas school halls contribute half of the private studios which is 24%. Community halls and others account for 18% of dance classes while college-based studios represent only the smallest share, just at 10%.

On the other side, approximately 600 students take interest in ballet which is the highest amount that is more common among under-11s , while the 11 to 16 age group like modern dance classes and almost 510 candidates are taking these classes. Only 300 number of students of the age of 11 to 16 years are showing interest in ballet while among under-11s same number of students are attending modern classes. In tap dance classes under 11-s students take a little bit more interest (430), while nearly 410 pupils are participating in that class.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the pie chart and the table. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the popularity of private studios and the age-related trends in dance styles. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by minor inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, stating that school halls contribute 'half of the private studios' is a misinterpretation of the chart, which shows them as separate categories. Additionally, the comparison of the tap dance figures is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data is reported with absolute precision and that comparisons are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In terms of,' 'whereas,' and 'On the other side.' However, the transition between the two charts could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow within the second body paragraph is slightly mechanical due to the repetitive listing of numbers. Improving the use of referencing and varying your linking phrases would help the ideas progress more naturally, which is a requirement for higher band scores.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'illustrates,' and 'participating.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'take interest in' (should be 'show interest in') and '300 number of students' (which is redundant). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but the precision is occasionally lacking. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate to describe statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'the 11 to 16 age group like modern dance' should be 'likes' (subject-verb agreement), and 'under 11-s students' is awkward phrasing. There are also some punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary space before the comma in 'under-11s ,'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
