Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features from both the pie chart and the bar graph. The overview paragraph successfully identifies key trends, noting that private studios are the most popular location and that ballet is prominent among younger children. Specific data points are cited effectively, such as private studios accounting for 48% and ballet having approximately 600 students under 11. However, the overview could be more comprehensive by capturing a broader summary of the dance types, and some comparisons are slightly basic. Nevertheless, the response clearly addresses the prompt and fulfills all requirements of Academic Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall progression, separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each chart. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall,' 'Furthermore,' and 'While.' Paragraphing is logical, with the pie chart data and bar graph data discussed in distinct sections. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally clumsy, as seen in the phrase 'with a 24% school halls is the second most visited location after school,' which disrupts the flow. Overall, the organization is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with appropriate terms such as 'illustrate,' 'demonstrates,' 'private studios,' and 'fan favorite.' The student attempts some less common vocabulary and accurately reports percentages and numbers. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'marked the highest destination' instead of 'constituted the most popular location' or 'highest percentage.' Spelling and word-choice errors are occasional and do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'While modern dancing is enjoyed by more than 500 students...'. There are several grammatical errors and typos throughout the text, such as 'dances classes' instead of 'dance classes,' 'comapares,' 'studends,' 'childrenof,' and 'attending this class are nearly 300' (subject-verb agreement error with 'number'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the overall communication of the data.
