Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the visual data, including the breakdown of locations and dance types across age groups. However, there are significant misinterpretations and inaccurate reporting of the data presented in the charts. For instance, the student states that ballet is 'taking by almost 600 students' in one age group and 'only approximatly 300 students learning the ballet type' in another, which confuses the categories and metrics shown in the stimulus. Furthermore, the charts are incorrectly identified as a 'line diagram' and 'bar diagram' when they are actually pie charts and bar charts. While the overview attempts to summarise the main information, the lack of accurate data reporting pulls the score down to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is structured into multiple paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by inaccurate descriptions and poor transitions. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inappropriately, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'However', which do not accurately signal the logical relationships between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is somewhat haphazard, mixing location data and dance type data without clear separation. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leading to a score of 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'shows', 'types', and 'students'. There are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'line diagram' instead of bar chart, 'pia chart' instead of pie chart, and awkward phrasing like 'contribute at 48% OF location'. Spelling mistakes such as 'approximatly' and 'tyoe' further detract from the quality of the response. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate, justifying a score of 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and overly basic complex structures with frequent errors. There are notable grammatical mistakes, including subject-verb agreement errors like 'The pie chart and line diagram illustrates' and missing auxiliary verbs or incorrect passive forms, such as 'learning by almost 550 students' instead of 'learned by'. Punctuation and capitalization are also flawed (e.g., lowercase 'australia'). These errors frequently cause strain for the reader, placing this response firmly at Band 5.0.
