Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts. The overview clearly highlights the most popular venue and draws out the primary age-related distinctions in dance classes. Data is appropriately selected, with specific figures cited for studio types and age groups. For example, the student notes that private studios recorded the highest number at 48% and points out that the under-11 group favoured ballet with 600 students. Comparisons are also integrated effectively, such as contrasting the under-11 preference for ballet with the older group's focus on modern dance. While the phrasing of some data points is slightly awkward, the overall response fully addresses the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is arranged logically with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph paraphrasing the prompt, moves to an overall summary paragraph, and then breaks down the details in subsequent paragraphs regarding locations and age groups respectively. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'Turning to the details', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different facets of the visual data. However, occasional referencing issues and mechanical transitions prevent the text from achieving a higher band. For instance, the sentence 'which were similar in ballet' lacks a clear antecedent, causing minor confusion in cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'illustrate', 'proportion', and various dance styles. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, the writer uses 'youth individuals' instead of young people, 'theses' instead of these, and 'college based studios' rather than college-based studios. Phrases like 'accounted for 48 %' are generally well handled, but phrasing such as '500 number of learners' is unnatural. Despite these lexical slips, the vocabulary remains sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although, the age group under 11 engaged most...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses that recur. For instance, the article usage is flawed in 'the most of classes', and sentence boundaries are occasionally compromised, as seen in the missing comma or fused phrasing in 'almost twice as much as the modern which were similar in ballet. The category modern...'. Preposition errors also occur, such as 'in college based studios' instead of at. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are varied enough to ensure the message is successfully communicated.
