Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts, successfully identifying the dominant locations and dance types across different age groups. The introduction paraphrases the prompt appropriately, and an overview is provided in the second paragraph. Key data points are selected and contrasted, such as Private Studios accounting for 48% in the first chart and the breakdown of Ballet versus Modern dance by age. However, some data reporting lacks precision or completeness, and the comparison could be further developed to fully explore all available data categories, such as community halls and college-based studios. Consequently, the task achievement is solid yet slightly limited in detail, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical layout with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs dedicated to each chart. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Initially', 'While', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and progression are sometimes awkward or mechanical, as seen with phrases like 'While on the other hand' and 'Secondly, the types of dances were different'. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother to avoid choppy sentence structures. Overall, the organization achieves a Band 6.0 level of coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data and charts such as 'proportion', 'accounted', 'depicts', and 'categories'. Attempts are made to use less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally accompanied by inaccurate word choices or awkward collocations, such as 'dance lectures', 'accounted the most percentage', and 'indicated the affection for people'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical inaccuracies restrict the score. The range is sufficient to communicate meaning clearly without impeding the reader, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'accounted the most percentage of 48%', 'older than 11 hold proportion', and 'didn't showed a good result'. Prepositional and article errors also occur throughout the text, such as 'on second on the list' and 'on third place'. Although these errors do not severely impede communication, they affect the overall accuracy of complex structures, resulting in a Band 5.0 score for this criterion.
