IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the locations of dance classes, while the bar chart shows the types of dance classes preferred by different age groups in Australia.
As can be seen from the pie chart, the four different locations of dance classes indicate their proportions. Private studios have the biggest proportion, which is around half, while college-based studios are the least popular. Schools also arrange dance classes after school, which cover one quarter of the pie chart. Community halls and other locations contribute 18 percent.
Turning to the bar chart, people who are under the age of 11 mostly prefer ballet, whereas those aged between 11 and 16 prefer modern dance classes. The numbers of students who enrolled in dance classes in the under-11 and 11–16 age groups are 450 and 420, respectively. 300 people joined ballet in the 11–16 age category, which is the lowest figure.
Overall, private studios are the most popular location, while the two age groups show an opposite trend in their preferences for dance styles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising both the pie chart and the bar chart, reporting main features and making relevant comparisons. The overview is clear and accurately highlights the most striking data points, such as the dominance of private studios and the contrasting trends between age groups. However, some specific data details contain inaccuracies or confusion; for example, the student states that the numbers of students in the under-11 and 11-16 age groups are 450 and 420, which misinterprets the breakdown of individual dance styles as total group figures. Despite this minor misreading of the bar chart, the response covers all required aspects adequately and meets the requirements of Task 1 well, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory statement, follows with body paragraphs dedicated to each chart, and concludes with a concise overview summary. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'As can be seen', 'Turning to the bar chart', and 'Overall' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is logical, with each chart and its features separated into distinct sections. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or formulaic. Overall, the writing is coherent and easy to follow, justifying a strong band 7 for this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Terms such as 'illustrates', 'proportions', 'dominant' (implied), and 'prefer' are used correctly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'contribute', 'proportion', and 'category', although some word choices and phrasing are slightly basic or repetitive (e.g., repeating 'dance classes' and 'proportion'). Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the response. While it lacks the more sophisticated lexical flexibility and precision found in higher bands, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the information clearly and effectively without causing any strain for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses ('As can be seen from the pie chart, the four different locations...') and participial phrases. There is a good degree of grammatical control, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and items in a list. Although the range of complex structures is somewhat limited compared to higher bands, the grammatical accuracy is commendable, with no intrusive errors that impede communication. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.
