IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie and bar charts provide information on the location and kinds of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
The Location of dance classes illustrates the percentage of studios and halls. Most of the people prefer private studios because they provide more comfort and learning skills. The private space supports their particular dancing beacuse their is more space, and they pay high charges for it. The dance instructor focuses on every student and helps them to encourage their unique dancing talent. School halls and College-based studios are mostly common among the students of primary and higher education. Community Halls are also beneficial for dancers.
The types of dance by age group demonstrate that the taste of dancers changes as they grow. Under the age of 11, ballet dance is more interesting for them, while as they grow, they find their interest in Modern dance. The majority of students go into modern dance and decline in ballet dance. Tap dance is the same at both ages.
Overall, the choice of students dancing changes and goes towards modern dance as they mature.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover both charts, noting the pie chart on location and the bar chart on dance types by age. However, the student struggles significantly with data reporting and interpretation. Instead of reporting the key data points from the charts (such as private studios being the most popular at 48%, or specific student numbers for ballet and modern dance), the writer includes irrelevant speculation and unsupported personal opinions, stating that private studios 'provide more comfort and learning skills' and that students 'pay high charges for it.' These details are not present in the visual data. Furthermore, the description of the bar chart lacks precise data extraction and contains vague assertions. Overall, the task is only partially addressed due to poor handling of the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a brief concluding sentence. However, the progression within the body paragraphs is frequently disrupted by irrelevant commentary and poor referencing. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases between sentences are weak, making the flow somewhat disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal coherence is compromised by the inclusion of outside assumptions rather than objective data reporting. Overall, the organization shows some structure, but the lack of clear data progression keeps it at a band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive ('dance classes', 'studios', 'students', 'dance'). There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'beacuse' and 'their' instead of 'there', which detract from the quality of the writing. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary items related to the topic, such as 'demonstrate', 'preference', and 'mature', inaccuracies in collocation and word form are apparent (e.g., 'the taste of dancers changes', 'ballet dance is more interesting for them'). The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but errors in spelling and word choice cause some distraction for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Most of the people prefer private studios because they provide more comfort...' and 'Under the age of 11, ballet dance is more interesting for them, while as they grow...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues and awkward preposition use (e.g., 'go into modern dance', 'decline in ballet dance', 'choice of students dancing changes'). Punctuation is generally basic. While meaning is mostly retrievable despite the errors, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
