Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address both parts of the prompt, mentioning the pie chart on locations and the bar chart on dance types. However, there are significant inaccuracies in interpreting the data. For instance, the introduction states that dance classes are 'attended by adults', whereas the prompt specifies 'young people'. Furthermore, the data description contains inaccuracies, such as stating that 'tap dance is almost steady in both age group comprising 400 to 4500 students', which misreads the maximum value of 700 on the axis and introduces a typographical or reading error ('4500'). The overview is somewhat confused by awkward phrasing, such as 'the highest 48% of private studios is covered by dance practice'. While main features are touched upon, the lack of precision and misinterpretation of the visual data pull the score down into this band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into four short paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs corresponding to the two charts. However, logical progression is frequently hindered by unnatural transitions and awkward sentence structures, such as starting a sentence with 'Subsequently, in bar chart illustration'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inappropriately, and referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in phrases like '18% of community halls and other area is utilized as well as 24% of school halls is also used'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth flow, leading to a somewhat disjointed reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and frequently strained by awkward collocations and word choice errors. Examples include 'location of dance classes are attending by adults', 'dance practice', and 'age limit 11 to 16'. There are attempts to use vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'substantially performed' and 'accounts for', but these are often used inaccurately or unnaturally. Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary control is weak, leading to expressions that impede smooth communication and obscure precise meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or passive structures frequently result in serious grammatical errors, such as 'the location of dance classes are attending by adults' and 'types of dance classes performed by variable age of various students'. Subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage are problematic throughout the text (e.g., 'in bar chart illustration', 'comprising 400 to 4500 students'). Frequent errors in basic grammar cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to this level.
