Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the prompt well by summarising the location of dance classes and detailing the types of dance across different age groups. Key features are successfully identified and compared, such as highlighting that private studios account for the highest proportion at 48 percent, and noting the differences in participation numbers for ballet, tap, and modern dance between the two age groups. For instance, the student correctly points out that 'almost 48% of studios are private studios, the highest of all' and accurately reports the breakdown for modern dance. However, the response lacks a clear overall summary or synthesis paragraph at the beginning or end to tie the main trends together, which prevents it from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the task is addressed competently.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically with a coherent overall progression. It is divided into an introductory sentence, a body paragraph focusing on the first chart, and another body paragraph discussing the second chart, showing an appropriate use of paragraphing. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Based on the 1st chart', 'almost', 'whereas', and 'while'. However, some transitions are rather mechanical or repetitive, and referencing could be smoother. For example, starting paragraphs with direct references to 'the 1st chart' and 'The second chart' is somewhat formulaic rather than fully integrated into an academic writing style. Nevertheless, the logical sequence of information is maintained throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data reporting and dance styles, such as 'proportion', 'studios', 'ballet', 'tap', and 'modern'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary ('percentage', 'community halls'), but word choice and phrasing are sometimes overly basic or slightly awkward, such as 'people are performing in various studios' and 'students are those whose age is'. Minor slips in capitalization also occur, such as 'australia' instead of 'Australia'. However, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the information clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'while 300 students are those whose age is 11 to 16 years' and 'Modern dance is being performed by almost 300 students'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing capitalization ('australia'), wordiness ('students are those whose age is'), and slightly clumsy passive voice constructions. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple structures are accurate, showing a fair degree of control over basic grammatical forms.
