Student answer (Band 5.5)
The Pie chart illustrates the data about the location for the dance classes that young individuals are currently attending in an Austrilian town, while the bar charts compares the age for three different types of dances. Overall, Private studios accompanied the significant percentage of location, while college-based studios were at the least proportion for dance classes. Numerous number of students wanted to take ballet dance classes and least number of student were in the modern dance classes. Private studios accounted for the highest percentage, at 48%, followed by school halls(after-school), at the proportion of 24%. Moreover, community halls and other location accompanied 18%. However college-based studios reserved almost 10% which is the least percentage among all locations. Ballet was the most common type among 500 students who was under 11 and least in almost 300 students of the age of 11-16, followed by tap dance, that accounted for almost 430 students of under-age and 450 student of 11-16. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing both the pie chart and the bar charts, including comparisons and key features. An overview is provided, noting that private studios were the most popular location while college-based studios were the least, and highlighting general trends for ballet and modern dance across age groups. However, there are some data inaccuracies and misreadings in the body paragraphs. For instance, the student states that ballet was 'most common among 500 students who was under 11', whereas the transcription shows 600 students for under-11 ballet. Similarly, the figures for tap and modern are slightly conflated or inaccurately reported. Despite these data errors, the main features of the visual data are generally captured, earning a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph containing an overview, followed by separate paragraphs detailing the location data and the dance types by age group. Cohesive devices and transition words such as 'Overall', 'while', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used to connect ideas, though some referencing is slightly mechanical or repetitive ('accounted for', 'accompanied'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct visual charts. The logical arrangement makes the text easy to follow despite the minor data flaws, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to data reporting such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'accounted for', and 'common'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'accompanied the significant percentage of location' instead of 'accounted for the largest share', and spelling errors like 'Austrilian' and 'compares' (instead of 'compare'). Less common vocabulary is attempted but sometimes misused, placing the lexical performance firmly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., 'Modern dance classes, which is the most common among the 11-16 age group...'). However, grammatical and punctuation errors are recurrent, including subject-verb agreement issues ('students who was', 'least number of student'), missing articles ('the pie chart', 'the least proportion'), and awkward phrasing ('Numerous number of students'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the text from reaching a higher band, making Band 6.0 an appropriate score.
