Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The provided pie chart illustrates the distribution of dance class locations in an Australian town, while the horizontal bar chart shows the number of young participants enrolled in different types of dance classes across two age groups (under 11 and 11 to 16).Overall, private studios are by far the most popular location for dance lessons, whereas college-based studios are the least common. Additionally, younger children mostly prefer ballet, while older teenagers favor modern dance.Looking at the pie chart, private studios account for nearly half of all venues at 48%. School halls used after school are the second most common choice at 24%, which is half the percentage of private studios. Community halls and other locations make up 18%, and college-based studios record the lowest figure at just 10%.Turning to the bar chart, ballet is the most popular style for children under 11, with nearly 600 participants, but this number drops to about 300 for the 11–16 age group. For modern dance, the trend is reversed; older youths aged 11–16 lead with roughly 520 students, compared to 300 younger children. Meanwhile, tap dancing shows a more even distribution between both age groups, with roughly 440 younger participants and 410 older participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by effectively summarising both the pie chart and the horizontal bar chart. The main features are clearly reported, and relevant comparisons are made both within and between the charts. For instance, the student notes that private studios account for nearly half of all venues at 48%, whilst college-based studios record the lowest figure at just 10%. Furthermore, clear comparisons are drawn between the two age groups for different dance styles, such as ballet and modern dance. The overview provided in the second paragraph successfully highlights the key global trends without getting bogged down in unnecessary minor details, fully satisfying the requirements for a Band 8 level in Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Ideas are arranged coherently, starting with a clear introductory statement and overview, followed by dedicated paragraphs for each chart. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the analysis of the pie chart from the bar chart. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'Additionally', 'Turning to the bar chart', and 'Meanwhile' are managed well to guide the reader smoothly through the response. Referencing is clear throughout, and logical relationships between data points are maintained without mechanical over-use of cohesive links.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. Less common lexical items and phrasing are used accurately, such as 'distribution', 'account for', 'trend is reversed', and 'even distribution'. Word choice and collocations are generally natural, with only very occasional minor issues. The terminology related to data representation, such as 'figure', 'proportion', and 'participants', is handled competently. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the text, supporting a clear and professional tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. Complex structures are handled with good control, seen in sentences like 'While tap dancing shows a more even distribution between both age groups, with roughly 440 younger participants and 410 older participants.' Punctuation and grammatical accuracy are generally very high, with only minor formatting slips such as the missing space before 'Overall' in the second sentence. Overall grammatical control easily meets the criteria for Band 7, displaying good flexibility and accuracy.
