Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to cover both charts, providing an overview and mentioning key features such as the dominance of private studios (48%) and the popularity of ballet for under-11s (600 students). However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the text claims that 'usage of school halls are almost the half' of private studios, but 24% is half of 48%, whereas the pie chart shows private studios make up 48% of the total, and school halls make up 24% of the total (making school halls half of the private studio figure, which the student phrased rather confusingly). Additionally, the description of the bar chart contains awkward phrasing and minor confusions regarding age groups and data points. Nevertheless, the main trends are addressed, supporting a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the charts. However, logical progression is frequently hindered by clumsy transitions and run-on sentences. For example, the sentence '...while, the bar chart compares...' contains an inappropriate comma and conjunction pairing. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'However' and 'while'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal cohesion of sentences and transitions requires improvement to achieve a clearer logical flow, placing this performance at Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'lion's share', 'significant interest', and 'favourable'. However, there are frequent word choice errors, spelling mistakes ('additon', 'commuity', 'childern', 'participator'), and awkward collocations (e.g., 'usage of private studio', 'college base studios'). Vocabulary control is inconsistent, and these lexical inaccuracies occasionally cause slight confusion for the reader. This performance aligns well with the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as subordinate clauses beginning with 'while' and 'as'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The childern aged under 11 shows', 'the usage of school halls are'), punctuation errors (unnecessary commas interrupting sentence flow), and awkward phrasing. These errors are noticeable and require some effort from the reader to interpret, although communication is not totally impeded. This warrants a Band 5.0.
