Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the charts by mentioning the different locations and types of dance classes, as well as age groups. However, the response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, stopping at 140 words, which negatively impacts task completion. Furthermore, the report lacks specific data points or accurate figures from the charts (e.g. failing to report percentages like 48% for private studios or exact student numbers for ballet and modern dance). Comparisons are quite basic, such as stating that under 11s prefer ballet and 11-16s prefer modern, but they lack precision and depth. To reach a higher band, the writer must include specific statistical evidence from the visual data and expand the overview to fully satisfy the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into four paragraphs, following a logical layout with an introductory sentence, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for locations and age groups. However, transitions between sentences and ideas are somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., beginning multiple sentences with 'There are' or 'People who are'). Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes misused. While paragraphing is attempted, the overall progression feels somewhat disjointed due to the lack of varied linking words and cohesive ties. Referencing and progression can be improved by employing more sophisticated conjunctions and cohesive phrases to link the disparate pieces of data together smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication but is heavily limited and repetitive. Words such as 'dance', 'classes', 'people', and 'locations' are repeated frequently throughout the response. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'College-based studios' and 'Community halls', but these are largely lifted directly from the prompt rather than paraphrased. There are also awkward word choices and phrasing errors, such as 'dance practice at Private studios' and 'more interested for Ballet dance'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lack of lexical flexibility and paraphrasing keeps this criterion at a modest level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. There are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues in the opening sentence ('The chart below give information') and preposition errors ('interested for', 'classes attending b young people'). Complex sentence forms are attempted but often clumsy or inaccurate. Punctuation is basic, and although sentences are generally understandable, the frequency of grammatical inaccuracies causes some disruption for the reader and prevents the writer from achieving a higher score.
