Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student covers both parts of the prompt, addressing the pie chart on dance class locations and the bar graph on dance class types by age group. The main features are identified, such as private studios being the most popular location (48%) and the shift in preferences between age groups (e.g., ballet being more popular for under-11s, whereas modern dance is more popular for teens). However, there are some imprecise descriptions of data, such as stating that teenagers plunged 300 from ballet (the data shows ballet drops from 600 to 300, so it drops by 300, not to 300) and minor inaccuracies in figures (mordern dance at 510 instead of 520). The overview is attempted in the second paragraph but is slightly awkward in expression. Overall, the task is adequately addressed, placing this in Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is structured into an introduction, an overall summary paragraph, and two body paragraphs focusing on the respective charts. There is a clear overall progression. However, cohesive devices and referencing are sometimes faulty, awkward, or mechanical (e.g., 'In pie chart the private studio take large number of space', 'rest of the 10% based on colleges'). Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers from clunky transitions and phrasing. Lexical repetition ('the private studio', 'by different age group') also affects the flow. This performance aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportion', 'participants', and 'stable'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling ('infromation' for information, 'elaborate' for illustrates, 'proportation' for proportion, 'mordern' for modern). Awkward phrasing such as 'significantly cover the more area' and 'take large number of space' demonstrates limited control over less common vocabulary. While communication is not severely impeded, these noticeable inaccuracies and spelling slips prevent the score from reaching Band 6.5. A Band 6.0 is appropriate as the vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses and comparative structures ('where 300 participants of under 11 which is very less as compared to teens'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the private studio significantly cover', 'the amount of teenagers... is noticeable decline'), preposition errors ('attending by', 'in pie chart'), and incorrect verb forms ('has spent 18%', 'consuming more time'). These errors occur regularly throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication. This corresponds closely to the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, sitting comfortably at a Band 6.0 given the mix of structures attempted.
