IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustration depicts two different graphs, one showing a pie chart presenting the portions of students in different locations, and the other depicting a horizontal bar graph showing the number of students in different dance classes distributed by age groups.

Overall, the pie chart has the highest portion for private studios attracting the highest number, followed by school halls and community halls. In contrast, college based studios is only able attract a small portion of students. On the otherhand, the horizontal graph shows three different classes with ballet attaracting the most participants from age under 11, while modern dance presents highest number of students from age 11- 16. Tap dance remains stable with attracting partcipants from both age groups almost equally.

First of all, the pie chart is distributed with portions depicting the number of partcipants in different locations. Starting with private studios, showing highest number of students with 48% of the toal student participants, Followed by school halls with 24% , and community halls accomodating 18% of the total students, and lastly the college-based studios managing to attarcting only 10% of the participating individuals.

Secondly, the bar graph shows different dance claases and the different age group participating in each lesson. Firstly, the ballet class has the highest attendance of 600 students from age group of under 11 while individuals from 11 to 16 are half of the above. Then the tap dance lesson, it is fairly stable with both age group balanced with more the 400 participants from 11 to 16, while the under 11 consist of 450 participants. Lastly, the modern dance, it has the highest number from 11- 16 age group with just over 500 participants while under 11 age group individual are only 300 in number.

Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific chart descriptions. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing affects the flow slightly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate the information effectively. Less common items such as 'participants', 'accommodating', and 'stable' are attempted with some awareness of academic style. However, there are several lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including typos such as 'attaracting', 'partcipants', 'claases', and 'attarcting'.
