Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of both the pie chart and the bar graph. Key features and comparisons are successfully reported. For instance, the writer correctly identifies that private studios are the dominant location (48%) and that college-based studios represent the lowest share (10%). In the second part, comparisons are made between the age groups for different dance types, such as noting that ballet and tap are popular among under-11s. However, there are some minor misreadings or strange phrasings of the data, such as referring to 11-16 year old students as 'educators' and stating that tap classes outnumber by 'almost 20 students' (the data actually shows 450 vs 420 for under-11 and 11-16 in tap, meaning a 30 student difference, though this is a minor numerical slip). Overall, the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 in Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, following a standard introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs covering the separate charts. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'As to', 'Moreover', and 'Regarding'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the pie chart details from the bar graph details. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes slightly mechanical or awkward, and spacing issues around punctuation slightly detract from fluency. Nevertheless, there is a clear overall progression that makes the report easy to follow, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, employing terms such as 'illustrates', 'proportion', 'constitute', and 'outnumbers'. However, there are several spelling errors ('respectivly', 'dominat', 'modren', 'Accoding', 'porportion', 'approximatly', 'calss', 'respectivly') and lexical slips (e.g., using 'educators' instead of 'students' or 'attendees'). These errors do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, placing it firmly at Band 5.5 to 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and comparative forms such as 'private studios account for the maximum proportion at 48%, Whereas college based studios constitute the minimum percentage'. There are, however, frequent punctuation and grammatical errors, including missing articles, incorrect capitalization ('australia'), and spacing issues before punctuation marks (e.g., 'Overall , it can be seen...'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from the polish of the writing, they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar corresponds to a Band 6.0.
