Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart, and makes relevant comparisons. The overview captures the highest location percentage (private studios) and touches upon age trends, although some details in the body paragraphs contain minor inaccuracies or confusion regarding the data. For instance, the statement 'maximum amount of younger who have belonged to 11year old they joined ballet' misinterprets the data, as 600 students under 11 joined ballet compared to 300 aged 11–16. Nevertheless, the response successfully highlights key proportions such as 48% for private studios and 24% for school halls. The selection of data is generally relevant, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, an overall summary, followed by a breakdown of the pie chart and then the bar chart. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'After analyzing the pie chart', and 'Furthermore'. However, some transitions and referencing are mechanical or awkward, such as 'Moving toward, in horizontal bar chart to begin with...', which disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is logical, but the internal cohesion within sentences occasionally falters due to grammatical issues. Overall organization is coherent enough to earn a Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for a Task 1 response, including terms like 'proportion', 'escalated', and 'favourable'. However, there are frequent inappropriate word choices and awkward collocations, such as 'dance classes are joining by younger generation', 'largest figure of dance class's location', and 'negligible different can be seen'. Vocabulary is generally adequate to convey meaning, but word-formation and precision errors place it firmly in the Band 5 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is weak. There are numerous errors in verb forms, voice, and agreement, such as 'classes are joining by' (passive voice error), 'maximum amount of younger who have belonged to' (clunky and inaccurate phrasing), and '200 of student who have belonged'. Punctuation is also problematic in places, leading to run-on sentences. While meaning is usually retrievable, frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptors.
