Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart. An overview is provided, highlighting key differences such as the dominance of private studios for locations and the shift in dance types across age groups. Data is generally reported accurately, mentioning figures like 48% for private studios and 600 for ballet under 11. However, there are minor typos in some data points (e.g., stating 410 instead of 420 for tap dance in the 11-16 age group, though the visual value was approximate, and minor spelling issues). Overall, the task is adequately covered with relevant comparisons made, placing it comfortably at Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, body paragraph one detailing the pie chart, and body paragraph two discussing the bar chart. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'Turning first to', and 'in contrast'. However, cohesion and referencing suffer from mechanical errors, run-on sentences, and punctuation issues, such as 'chartwhich' and lowercase starting letters after periods (e.g., 'private studios are most common'). Paragraphing is appropriately utilized to separate distinct visual datasets, earning a solid Band 6 for this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying general trends using words like 'proportion', 'common', 'popular', and 'representation'. There are attempts at less common lexical items, but these are often accompanied by word-form or spelling errors, such as 'accoounted', 'college-base', and 'medern'. Collocations are mostly acceptable, but phrasing can be repetitive or slightly unnatural (e.g., 'taken by only 300' or 'medern dance is much prefered represent'). The range is sufficient to communicate meaning clearly despite noticeable spelling mistakes, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures (e.g., 'Ballet dance is more popular among children under 11 in contrast modern dance is much popular...'). However, grammatical accuracy is limited by frequent punctuation errors, missing articles, capitalization mistakes, and spelling slips (e.g., 'accoounted', 'chartwhich', 'least least'). Several sentences lack proper punctuation or conjunctions, resulting in run-on structures. While meaning is rarely completely obscured, the frequency of errors prevents the grammar score from rising above Band 5.5.
