Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the prompt by describing both the pie chart (location of classes) and the bar chart (types of classes by age). The student successfully identifies key features, such as private studios being the most popular location (48%) and college-based studios being the least (10%). For the bar chart, comparisons are made between age groups and dance styles, noting that ballet is most popular under 11, while modern dance peaks in the 11-16 age group. However, there are some inaccuracies and confusing phrasing in the data reporting, such as claiming the number of people between 11 and 16 like ballet is the same as modern, and some grammatical awkwardness in data interpretation. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each chart separately, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In sharp contrast', 'From the bar chart', and 'To sum up'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'the least one' or 'The number of people between 11 and 16 like ballet is same as that of modern'), and paragraphing could be executed more smoothly. Paragraphs are reasonably distinct, but transitions between sentences occasionally feel abrupt, placing this response solidly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'proportion' (implicitly used), 'majority', and 'contrast'. However, there are several word choice errors, typos, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'perfer' instead of 'prefer', 'quater' instead of 'quarter', and awkward phrases like 'least domain chose the location college-based studios'. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, the frequent lexical inaccuracies and limited flexibility prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and contrasting structures (e.g., 'In sharp contrast, the location of one-tenth of them are in college-based studios which is the least one'). However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the location of one-tenth of them are'), missing prepositions, and clunky phrasing ('more than 500 below aged above 11'). These errors occasionally impede smooth reading, though the meaning is usually retrievable. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 5.5.
