Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The student attempts to address both parts of the prompt, mentioning the location and types of dance classes. However, the response contains significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the visual data. For instance, the writer states that 'the maximum students is in the Ballet dance', whereas the data indicates that ballet has 600 students under 11 and 300 for 11-16 (total 900), while modern dance has 300 under 11 and 520 for 11-16 (total 820), and tap has 450 + 420 = 870. Furthermore, data points are randomly cited without a clear overview of main trends, such as private studios dominating locations at 48%. The overview lacks clarity and fails to adequately summarise the primary features of the charts. Consequently, the response falls into Band 4.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The organisation of the text is somewhat disjointed and lacks a logical progression. The introductory sentence is weak, and sentences are abruptly linked without adequate cohesive devices. Phrases like 'Look at the remaining figures' are overly conversational and inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. Paragraphing is fragmented, with single or double sentences separated rather than grouped by thematic content. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which data points correspond to which categories. While there is a basic attempt to structure a report, the overall coherence is significantly impeded by poor paragraphing and mechanical transitions. This performance aligns with Band 4.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms such as 'students', 'class', and 'dance'. There are notable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'young ones accounted for 18 percentage' instead of 'percentage', 'students went into this class', and 'student take participate'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'proportion' and 'individual', but these are used inaccurately. Spelling and word choice issues are noticeable throughout the text and occasionally cause confusion for the reader. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, fitting the Band 5.0 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. There are persistent subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'The pie chart provide' and 'the maximum students is', as well as incorrect verb tenses and auxiliary usage (e.g., 'is presently attending', 'students went into this class'). Complex sentences are attempted, but they are often grammatically faulty and confusing, such as 'However, After the school in School halls the students went into this class and in this class the age of students under 11.' Frequent errors cause difficulty and strain for the reader, placing this response firmly in Band 4.0.
