Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the visual data by describing the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting that private studios are the most popular location and college-based studios the least. Key figures are accurately reported, such as the 48% for private studios and the contrasting trends between age groups in dance types, where ballet dominates for under-11s and modern dance leads for the 11-16 age group. Minor data approximations (e.g., writing 610 instead of 600 for ballet) are well within acceptable margins. Overall, the response meets all requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 in this criterion, demonstrating a clear attempt to select and report main features with comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph for the pie chart, and a body paragraph for the bar chart. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall,' 'In the pie chart,' and 'While.' However, some transitional links are awkward or mechanically deployed, such as 'Among ballet classes has the most number of students...' and 'While, in modern dance classes age from 11 to 16 is attending in huge figure.' Referencing is occasionally unclear due to grammatical awkwardness, but an overall logical progression is maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data presentation and dance categories, such as 'proportion,' 'attendance trends,' and 'ballet.' However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout, including 'holds the highest amount of location' instead of 'accounts for the highest proportion of locations,' and 'held after school' instead of 'conducted' or 'held.' Less common lexical items are attempted but often lead to unnatural phrasing, placing this firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. While the student attempts complex structures with clauses introduced by 'while' and 'where,' these often contain grammatical errors, such as 'Among ballet classes has the most number of students attending are under 11' (which suffers from tangled syntax and subject-verb agreement issues). Punctuation and comma splices are also problematic, for example: 'While, private studio...' and 'While, college based is lowest...'. Errors are frequent enough to occasionally cause the reader to pause, though they do not completely impede overall communication.
