Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart and bar graph provide the data about the youngsters who are attending the different dance classes at the different locations in Australia. Data are expressed in percentages and age catagories.

Overall, dance students joining the private studios hit a high in contrast to students learing dance in college-based studios which showed the least number of students. Similarly, highest number of young ones joined the ballet dance. However, teenagers preffered the modern dance classes.

In terms of location, 48% of the people with young age selected private studios for their dance classes. This is followed by private studios, where 24% of young students preffered school halls. The dance classes offered by the college-based studios attracted the least number of students with only 10%.

The highest number of students (around 600) under the age of 11 showed their interest in selecting the ballet dance. While, over 500 teenagers below 16 years old opted for modern dance classes. Tap dance classes showed a combination of both age groups students. However, students under 11 were still higher in number.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting key features from both the pie chart and the bar graph. The main trends are accurately reported, such as private studios being the most popular location and ballet/modern dance varying across age groups. However, there are minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing in data reporting, such as stating 'where 24% of young students preffered school halls' right after mentioning private studios, which creates a slight confusion regarding the data points. Despite this, the overall response successfully addresses the prompt and presents a clear, relevant summary of the visual data, aligning well with the expectations of Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is structured logically into four paragraphs, following a standard academic overview-and-body-paragraph format. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'In terms of location', and 'This is followed by'. However, paragraphing and referencing occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between paragraphs and sentences can be slightly abrupt. Logical progression is maintained throughout, but greater flexibility in referencing and smoother transitions would be required for a higher band. Overall, the organization is clear and coherent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'youngsters', 'proportion', 'attracted the least number', and 'opted for'. There are, however, a few spelling and word choice errors, such as 'catagories' instead of 'categories', 'learing' instead of 'learning', and 'preffered' instead of 'preferred'. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural or repetitive, such as 'highest number of young ones joined the ballet dance'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases effectively (e.g., 'In terms of location, 48% of the people...'). Grammatical control is generally adequate, but there are notable errors, such as 'provide the data about the youngsters who are attending' (where 'data' is treated as plural in the next sentence 'Data are expressed') and awkward preposition usage like 'in contrast to students learing dance in college-based studios'. Punctuation is mostly correct, but spelling errors ('catagories', 'preffered') slightly detract from accuracy. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in Band 6.0.
