Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting data from both charts and making relevant comparisons. The student identifies the highest and lowest values for both location and dance types, noting that private studios are the most popular location and referencing categories like Ballet, Tap, and Modern across the two age groups. However, there are some inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the student states that Ballet had the highest number of students around 600 overall and that under-11s take Ballet more than any other group, whereas Modern actually reached 520 for the 11-16 age group and surpassed Ballet in that bracket. Additionally, the phrasing is repetitive, and the analysis would benefit from clearer grouping and structuring. Nevertheless, a clear overview of the main features is attempted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response lacks proper paragraphing, as the entire text is presented as a single dense block. This significantly impacts the logical flow and makes it difficult for the reader to transition between the two distinct charts (location and dance types). While the writer attempts to use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'While', and 'then', their overuse and mechanical placement fail to create a natural progression of ideas. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting abruptly between the two surveys without clear signposting. To achieve a higher band, the essay must be divided into logical paragraphs with distinct introductions, body paragraphs for each chart, and clearer referencing throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on words like 'dance classes', 'survey', and 'number of students'. There are several noticeable word-choice and spelling errors, such as 'Modren' instead of 'Modern', 'the most least number' (a double superlative), and awkward phrasing like 'went to Tap type of dance classes' instead of 'attended tap dance classes'. While the student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'approximately', 'maximum', and 'proportion' equivalents, inaccurate word formation and collocation cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in tense and agreement, such as 'the dance classes become' and 'dance classes becoming famous', as well as missing articles and preposition errors (e.g., 'given under private studios'). Punctuation is also problematic, particularly run-on sentences joined by commas instead of proper conjunctions or full stops. Although simple sentences are generally understandable, errors in complex forms are frequent and occasionally obscure the precise meaning of the comparisons.
