Student answer (Band 6.5)

Two charts provide the information on the location and type of dance classes that are available for young people in a town in Australia. The pie chart illustrates the available locations of the dance classes and the bar chart give the detail on the type of dance preferred by children categorised in two age groups.

Overall, private studios are the most popular choice for children to learn dance from. In under 11 category ballet is the most preferred and for 11 to 16 age group modern dance form is more popular. It can also be noted that there are more students in under 11 category in comparison to the 11 to 16 age group.

The pie chart shows that 48% of people prefer private studios to learn dance. In distant second school halls (after school) are popular at 24%. At 18% popularity community halls and other location come in third position. The most unpopular location at 10% preference is college based studios.

In the under 11 category, ballet is the most popular dance form with 600 students participating. Then comes tap and modern dance form which are at 450 and 300 students respectively. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the 48% preference for private studios and the 600 students participating in ballet under 11. Appropriate comparisons are made between the two age groups, noting shifts in popularity from ballet to modern dance. The overall trends are successfully identified, fulfilling the requirements for Task Achievement at a high level. However, a minor slip occurs when stating modern dance is at 530 students for teenagers, whereas the transcription indicates 520, though this is a very minor discrepancy that does not detract from the overall strong performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. The introduction outlines the two charts, followed by a well-structured overview paragraph. Subsequent paragraphs deal logically with the pie chart data and the bar chart data respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In distant second', and 'respectively' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate different visual elements and categories. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring smooth transitions between sentences and ideas throughout the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task 1 response, employing terms like 'illustrates', 'categorised', 'participating', and 'respectively'. Less common phrases such as 'most popular choice' and 'distant second' are used effectively. While some phrasing is a bit repetitive or basic—such as repeatedly using 'popular'—the lexical choices are precise enough to convey the data clearly. There are minor inaccuracies in word collocation, such as 'dance form which are at', but these do not impede communication and allow the piece to read smoothly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Examples include introductory dependent clauses ('In under 11 category...') and relative clauses. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'the bar chart give' instead of 'gives', and missing articles in phrases like 'In under 11 category'. However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled adequately. The errors present do not impede communication, showing a solid command of basic and moderately complex grammar.
