Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address both charts by mentioning the pie chart data on locations and the bar chart data on dance types. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies in the reporting of the data. For instance, the student states that college-based students cover the smallest proportion which is roughly 24%, whereas the chart clearly shows this is 10%, while 24% belongs to school halls. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls slightly short at 149 words. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of precision in reporting figures and the word count penalty restrict the score. To improve, ensure all data is meticulously checked against the visual source and write slightly more than the 150-word minimum.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the charts. However, logical progression is hindered by confusing transitions and structural inaccuracies, such as mixing data points within paragraphs without a clear thematic focus. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive. For example, sentences in the third paragraph are disjointed and rely on awkward listing. Paragraphing is present, but the overall organization lacks the clear logical flow expected at higher bands. To improve, use clearer signposting language and group related information logically, ensuring each paragraph has a distinct focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts some task-specific vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'private studios', and 'age group'. However, there are frequent lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'Modren' (spelling error), 'accounts largest proportion' (missing preposition 'for'), and 'largest loaction' (spelling error). The range of vocabulary is limited, and spelling mistakes like 'interseted' and 'od' detract from the overall quality. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use collocations more accurately, and carefully proofread their writing to eliminate basic spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is weak, leading to frequent grammatical errors and run-on sentences. Examples of errors include 'Private studios accounts largest proportion' (subject-verb agreement), 'College-based students covers' (incorrect plural/singular agreement and incorrect data reporting), and comma splices such as 'Modern dance have more than 500, children aged 11-16 these children are less interested in ballet.' Punctuation is also problematic in places. While simple sentences are occasionally accurate, the high frequency of grammatical slips impedes smooth reading and limits the score to a Band 5.0.
