Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting information on both the location of dance classes and the types of dance classes by age group. Key features are selected, such as private studios being the most popular location at 48%, and comparisons are made between age groups for different dance styles. However, there are notable data inaccuracies in the body paragraphs: the text states that 'Ballet dance was the most popular among teenagers, while modern type of dance was mostly attended by children under 11,' which directly contradicts the visual data (where modern is 520 for 11-16 and ballet is 600 for under 11). Furthermore, the response trails off abruptly at the end ('number od st'). These inaccuracies and the incomplete ending prevent the score from reaching higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is structured into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the two charts. Cohesive devices are attempted (e.g., 'Overall', 'Moreover', 'In addition'), but some are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'which afterthat followed by'. Paragraphing is present and logical, attempting to group information by chart. However, referencing is occasionally unclear, and the overall progression suffers due to the abrupt cutoff at the very end of the text. Paragraph transitions feel somewhat mechanical rather than naturally flowing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with attempts at less common words and phrases such as 'proportion', 'contributed', and 'participated'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'The charts illustrate about' (unnecessary preposition), 'attended in private studios' (should be 'attended at' or 'held in'), and spelling/typographical errors like 'pnly' and 'od st'. The range is sufficient to convey the basic information, but lexical control is inconsistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which recorded the highest proportion') and subordinate clauses ('while modern type of dance was mostly attended'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The private studios has recorded'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('students who aged under 11'). Punctuation and sentence completion are also compromised by the unfinished final sentence. These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader.
